Vampires becoming a part of mainstream society is not welcome news to all humans, especially Steve Newlin, who founds a new religious order. The Fellowship of the Sun is openly antagonistic to vampires but to the public eye, this is all political blathering. Nan Flannigan, head of the American Vampire League and Steve are often seen battling it out on late night television. What many do not know is that the Fellowship is training recruits to do some serious damage to their new undead neighbors.
Boot Camp
During season two, Jason leaves Bon Temps in hopes of changing his life. He was approached in jail by a recruiter for the Fellowship of the Sun and since Jason also has a dim view on vampires, he runs off to join the church.
Not sure of what he will find Jason is greeted by a boot camp like setting in which new recruits run, exercise and learn to fight vampires. Only to defend themselves of course! A common saying among the believers is “Praise his holy light”. In truth, the Reverend Newlin and his bride Sarah are preparing for an Armageddon like war with the vampires. It isn’t long before the Newlins take a bigger interest in Jason and share their home with him. Steve soon takes him to see the large weapons store beneath the compound and Sarah allows him to see even more, of her! In the end, it is discovered that Reverend Newlin was perfectly aware of who Jason was and more importantly, who his sister is.
Meeting the Sun
Eric’s maker has gone missing and he is sure the Fellowship of the Sun is behind it all. Eric enlists Sookie’s help to go to Dallas and find out more information. During their trip, all evidence points to the Newlin’s but vampires are prohibited from taking direct action against humans, despite the cause. This leads to Sookie infiltrating the camp, being taken captive, nearly raped and the revelation that Godric is indeed with the Sun group, but of his own choosing. Godric had decided to meet the sun and face the true death.
Conclusion
At the end of the third season, the Fellowship of the Sun and their bigoted message has pretty much become background noise to the rest of the plot. However, when season four begins it is revealed that Steve Newlin has been missing for six months. Will the Fellowship rear its ugly head again this season? Who will they target next and where on earth is the reverend?
