British TV credits include ‘Men Only’ in 2001, ‘Lilies’ in 2007 and ‘Empathy’ in 2007. His screen debut was in ‘Prince Valiant’ in 1997, and was followed by the movie ‘Quills’ in 2000. Subsequent movies included ‘Entrusted’ in 2003 and ‘Restraint’ in 2008. United States TV credits include ‘Princess of Thieves’ in 2001 and ‘Uprising’ in 2001. Stephen has starred in True Blood as the character Bill Compton for 48 episodes from 2008 to 2011. Stephen is married to his co-star in True Blood, Anna Paquin (21^st August 2010 to present).

He garnered a lot of attention as well as good reviews for stage performances including his debut ‘Dealer’s Choice’ at Off-Broadway and a Tony Nomination in Broadway’s ‘Ah, Wilderness!’ back in 1998. TV performances included ‘Maximum Bob’ in 1998 and ‘Trinity’, also in 1998. Other roles include ‘Beat’ in 2000, ‘Followers’ in 2000 and ‘fear of Fiction’ in 2000. Stephen has starred in true Blood as the character Sam Merlotte from 2008 to 2011.

Intro: True Blood Season 1 introduces the Bon Temps, Louisiana residents as Bill, a vampire, moves into the small town and makes friends with Sookie, the local waitress at Merlotte’s who has telepathic abilities as well as a flair for solving a mystery.

Season 2 (2009) – Original Air Date: June 14^th 2009 – September 6^th 2009

Intro: True Blood Season 2 picks up from where the first season left off. Sookie enjoys having Bill back but has to put up with Jessica, his new vampire protégé. Sam has to wrestle with a few issues: to lose Sookie to Bill; to hide his supernatural ability; and to deal with Maryann, a ghost from his own past. Tara settles in to her luxurious surroundings of Maryann’s together with her new love interest namely Eggs, and she also has to deal with someone that was close to her being murdered. Jason is confused and seeks direction within his life and finds some solace with the Fellowship of the Sun, an anti vampire church.

Season 3 (2010) – Original Air Date: June 13^th 2010 – September 12^th 2010

Intro: Sookie is desperately trying to find Bill, her vampire fiancé and encounters a range of undead and humans along her way including Russell Edgington, the Mississippi vampire king as well as a pack of ferocious werewolves that feed on the blood of vampires. With Bill disappearing, Sookie draws closer to Eric, the vampire sheriff and Alcide, the werewolf. Both are nominally helping Sookie to locate her beau. Lafayette and Tara meanwhile, each find their own love in strange places. Sam finds out about long lost members of his family that help in shaping his identity – either for better or for worse.

Season 4 (2011) – Original Air Date: June 26^th 2011 – September 11^th 2011

Intro: At the close of True Blood Season 3 Russell Edgington the vampire king had been buried alive within a concrete pit which apparently ended plans for a world domination. Where did Sookie go and what happened to her when she disappeared in a blaze of light? After breaking her heart, can Bill make things right again? And what fate awaits Eric when he almost joined Russell the vampire king in limbo?

Episode 1: ‘She’s Not There’

Sookie journeys out of Bon Temps. Bill and Eric attempt to win the human public back. Jason finds out that no good deeds will go unpunished. Tara finds her refuge close by. Jessica and Hoyt discuss the dinner menu. Lafayette is urged by Jesus to join the coven. Terry attempts to ease Arlene’s fears concerning the baby.

Episode 2: ‘You Smell Like Dinner’

Sookie adjusts to the new realities of Bon Temps. Bill discloses pieces from his past. A witches’ meeting is crashed by Eric. Jason’s wounds are licked. Andy struggles a lot with his addiction. Sam finds out about the special talents of Luna. Jessica gratifies her blood cravings. Arlene witnesses her family’s strange behavior.

Episode 3: ‘If You Love Me, Why Am I Dyin’?’

Sookie and Eric make a deal. She and Alcide reconnect. An errant vampire is punished by Bill. Jessica is guilt-ridden and counseled by Bill. Jason is made into a reluctant savior. Tommy alienates Sam after eyeing a scam. Marnie flexes her own newfound powers. Jesus, Tara and Lafayette are given an ultimatum by Pam. Sookie’s faerie reunion is spoiled by Eric.

Episode 4: ‘I’m Alive and on Fire’

Sookie hunts for Eric and is helped by Alcide. Marnie looks for guidance in breaking a spell. Bill finds out about a common bond that he shares with the Bellefleurs. The inner circle of Luna is penetrated by Sam. Jason begs for release from Hotshot. Tommy goes back to his roots.

Episode 5: ‘Me and the Devil’

Eric is nurtured by Sookie. Bill becomes personally involved within the necromancy crisis. Sam becomes the accomplice of Tommy. The veil is taken by Pam. Terry and Arlene seek religion in solving their problems. Lafayette and Jesus head on to Mexico and harness the power of a shaman. Jason convalesces.

Episode 6: ‘I Wish I Was the Moon’

Sookie looks for Jason beneath the full moon. Terry and Arlene handle a suspicious fire. Marnie connects to the spirits of yesteryear. Alcide is urged by Debbie to join a werewolf community. Lafayette senses the spirit while in Mexico. Tommy swops places with Sam. Eric surrenders to the King’s will.

Episode 7: ‘Cold Grey Light of Dawn’

Eric accepts his amnesia rather eagerly. Luna discovers something interesting concerning Sam. Andy and Holly hook up. Lafayette starts noticing more of his own surroundings, thoughts, sensations and existence. Jessica doubts the future of her current relationship. Debbie and Alcide decide to join a werewolf community.

Episode 8: ‘Spellbound’

Marnie and Bill brace themselves for open confrontation. Jason is emotionally conflicted. Eric and Sookie’s loyalty is secured by the King. Lafayette is manipulated by a spirit for the spirit’s own purposes. There is an enemy that Sam must deal with again.

Episode 9: ‘Run’

Sookie tries to fathom how she will fit both Eric and Bill in her life. Marcus calls on Alcide to help provide assistance. Lafayette needs the help of Jesus to rid himself of a spirit which has taken him over. Bill comes into direct opposition with Nan over opposing ideas. Marnie secretly works out her strategies towards the next steps against all the vampires.

Episode 10: ‘Burning Down the House’

Bill needs Sookie’s help. Terry attempts to help Andy concerning an intervention. Jessica is begged to glamour Jason. Alcide re-evaluates his loyalties. The vampires are organized by Bill to attack the Moon Goddess Emporium of Marnie’s.

Episode 1: ‘Pack of Wolves’

Sookie asks Eric to help find Bill. Jason is urged by Andy to stay his course. Sam goes back to his past.

Episode 2: ‘Beautifully Broken’

Russell Edgington – Mississippi Vampire King – devises a plan to secure his power. The strength of Sam’s family bonds are tested by him. Eric remembers the past. A shady vampire called Franklin Mott becomes Tara’s ally.

Episode 3: ‘It Hurts Me Too’

Sookie heads off to Jackson, Mississippi to look for Bill with a werewolf bodyguard called Alcide, consigned by Eric for her protection. Jason is sidetracked from his policeman exams. Lafayette is bequeathed a gift by Eric. Franklin then charms Tara. Haunted by images of his past, Bill then makes a pledge of alliance.

Episode 4: ‘9 Crimes’

Sookie and Alcide go to a loud engagement party for Debbie Pelt, his ex fiancé. Bill secures dinner for Lorena and Russell. Arlene is annoyed by the arrival of Jessica at Merlotte’s. Andy is promoted and gets Jason’s attention. A deadline is given to Eric to find Bill. Franklin and Tara go on a road trip.

Episode 5: ‘Trouble’

Alcide and Sookie ask an alpha wolf packmaster how to deal with the minions of Russell. Jason meets a mysterious girl called Crystal. Lafayette learns what patience means from his mom’s orderly, Jesus. Tara thinks about Franklin’s proposal. Franklin completes Russell’s mission. Eric is reminded of his past with an heirloom.

Episode 6: ‘I Got a Right to Sing the Blues’

Sookie is spurned by Eric and fears for Bill. Lafayette’s romance with Jesus hits an obstacle, as does Jason’s with Crystal. Tara executes a frantic plan to keep Franklin’s advances at bay. Russell tells Eric about his master plan then goes to Louisiana to begin executing it. A Merlotte customer gives Jessica her fix.

Episode 7: ‘Hitting the Ground’

When Sookie tries to rescue Bill it has unforeseen consequences. Jason wants to know about Crystal. The Magister is ignored by Russell.

Episode 8: ‘Night on the Sun’

Sookie rethinks her and Bill’s relationship. Jessica is reconciled with Bill. Russell decides what to do next. Sophie-Anne moves from her residence. Lafayette gets a surprise visit from Ruby Jean. Merlotte’s has a new waitress. Eric’s allegiance towards Russell is confirmed.

Episode 9: ‘Everything is Broken’

The Vampire Rights Amendment will soon be approved so Eric is confronted by Nan at Fangtasia about where the Magister is. Russell swears revenge against all human and vampire adversaries. Bill finds out the true identity of Sookie. Tara meets a new ally.

Episode 10: ‘I Smell a Rat’

Sookie is cautioned about all the dangers she must deal with. Sam faces dark memories. Arlene asks for Holly’s help. Jason’s interest in the qualities of V are aroused. Russell swears to mete out punishment towards his enemies.

Episode 11: ‘Fresh Blood’

Bill looks for Sookie’s trust again but again endangers her. Russell is tempted by Eric’s ultimate vampire dream. Sam alienates every-one except Tara. Lafayette struggles with some new demons.

Episode 12: ‘Evil is Going On’

Sookie thinks about a life with no vampires of any sort. Jason has a new vocation in store after warning Crystal’s family of a possible drug raid. Jesus offers something more than just a relationship with Lafayette. Hoyt disregards his mother and thinks about his future with Jessica.

Episode 1: ‘Nothing but the Blood’

Bon Temps reels after a dreadful murder. Sookie and Bill’s relationship is tested after she finds out about Jessica and Bill’s involvement in the death of her uncle. Sam remembers a shape shifting encounter with Maryann when he was 17. Jason receives an unexpected windfall which pays for a Fellowship of the Sun leadership retreat.

Episode 2: ‘Keep this Party Going’

Sookie has to deal with Bill’s obligations towards Jessica and also put up with the romantic inconvenience that her presence creates. Jason impresses the leadership retreat’s ambitious leaders Sarah and Steve Newlin, though not Luke his resentful roommate. Maryann casts a spell on the patrons at Merlotte’s, and Sam is helpless in stopping her.

Episode 3: ‘Scratches’

A mysterious creature attacks Sookie and Bill enlists Eric’s help in saving her. Jason starts thinking twice about the anti-vampire agenda of the sect. Jessica goes to Merlotte’s, and Hoyt is smitten. Maryann hosts a party where Tara is attracted to Eggs but is interrupted by an aphrodisiac fog.

Episode 4: ‘Shake and Fingerpop’

Jason is now promoted to a soldier at the Fellowship of the Sun. Sookie and Bill are in Dallas, Texas on assignment. Sookie has to deal with Jessica as well. Tara has a birthday party thrown by Maryann where it gets out of hand. An agreement is made between Eric and Lafayette.

Episode 5: ‘Never Let Me Go’

Sooki connects with Barry, a fellow telepath. Jason gets a reward at the boot camp for his diligent work. Eric discloses a secret concerning his past together with Bill.

Episode 6: ‘Hard-Hearted Hannah’

Jason must make a hard emotional and physical decision. Sookie goes on a risky mission to find Godric, a powerful and ancient vampire.

Episode 7: ‘Release Me’

Sookie utilizes her telepathy to get Bill to rescue her. Jason attempts to cut his ties from the Fellowship of the Sun.

Episode 8: ‘Timebomb’

Sam discovers something gruesome at Merlotte’s. Jason pays his debts off to the vampires. Eggs and Tara eat a strange meat made by Maryann.

Episode 9: ‘I Will Rise Up’

Sookie is tricked into drinking Eric’s blood, and draws her in. Hoyt’s mother meets Jessica. She hates vampires. Sam is cornered by Maryann in jail. Tara’s mother and Lafayette recognize the evil ways of Maryann and rescue the possessed Tara.

Episode 10: ‘New World in My View’

Jason, Bill and Sookie go back to Bon Temps which is in ruins. Maryann has bewitched the population with her powers. Maryann’s minions corner Sam in the bar. Maryann is confronted by Sookie and Bill and ends up being drawn towards Sookie. Lafayette gets Sookie and Bill to attempt to exorcise Tara. Hoyt and Jessica have to deal with his bewitched mother.

Episode 11: ‘Frenzy’

The Vampire Queen of Louisiana, Sophie-Anne, is sought by Bill for advice with the crisis within Bon Temps. Lafayette and Sookie aim in protecting Tara from her own demons. Sam seeks assistance from an unlikely source. Hoyt has to deal with the actions of Jessica.

Episode 12: ‘Beyond Here Lies Nothing”

Fever pitch is reached in Bon Temps as Maryann starts preparing her bestial sacrifice. She recruits Sookie as Maid Of Honor. Andy is led into the abyss by Jason. Sam has to put his life and his trust in an unlikely ally.

Episode 1: ‘Strange Love’

The story begins two years later after finding out that vampires do actually walk amongst us. Sookie Stackhouse is a telepathic barmaid who works at Merlotte’s Bar at Bon Temps in Louisiana. She meets Bill Compton, a vampire and newcomer to this small town. Sookie is immediately attracted to him, partly because she is unable to read his mind. Meanwhile, Jason (Sookie’s brother) is arrested for killing a fang banger (someone sleeping with a vampire) while Tara (Sookie’s hot tempered friend) starts working with her for Sam Merlotte, their boss.

Episode 2: ‘The First Taste’

Sookie is rescued by Bill from his earlier attackers and gives her a bit of his blood so that her wounds will heal. She experiences strange side effects. Bill meets her family and Sooki meets Bill’s vampire friends. Bill keeps on having to fight his vampire urges with Sooki. Tara has to deal with her alcoholic mother, while the vampires are threatened by a new church.

Episode 3: ‘Mine’

Bill lays claim to Sookie and wards off the other fellow vampires. Jason asks for Lafayette’s help for his dilemmas in bed. Lafayette is the cook at Merlotte’s. Meanwhile, Sam and Tara provide comfort for each other.

Episode 4: ‘Escape from Dragon House’

Sookie seeks out her powers in finding the real murderer when Jason gets arrested for yet another murder. She is taken to Fangtasia (vampire bar) by Bill and meets Eric (played by Alexander Skarsard) who is a Viking vampire and the most supreme bloodsucker within the area. After taking some vampire blood, Jason suffers some effects.

Episode 5: ‘Sparks Fly Out’

Bill talks about his life during the Civil War when he was a Confederate soldier. Jason is drawn towards Tara after taking more vampire blood. Sam and Sookie go out together.

Episode 6: ‘Cold Ground’

Sookie seeks some solace from her friends and Bill after a tragedy. Tara and Sam connect as she deals with her drunken mother. Jason suffers withdrawal symptoms from some V juice.

Episode 7: ‘Burning House of Love’

Bill springs into action after learning of Sookies pained past. Jason meets Amy at Fangtasia while searching for some V juice to nourish his desire.

Episode 8: ‘The Fourth Man in the Fire’

Sookie prepares herself for yet more tragedy. Jason sees a darker side to Amy after the V juices run dry. Tara is surprised at the progress of her mother and considers extreme steps herself.

Episode 9: ‘Plaisir d’amour’

Bill has to pay for contravening a vampire rule of behavior. He asks Sam to protect Sooki while he is away. Jason grudgingly drains Eddie, another vampire, at the suggestion of Amy. Tara considers an exorcism.

Episode 10: ‘I Don’t Wanna Know’

Sam tells Sookie his secret. An engagement party is held at Merlotte’s for Rene and Arlene, but the murderer decides to strike at that time. Bill has to go on trial.

Episode 11: ‘To Love is to Bury’

Bill does his punishment but has to deal with some unexpected results. Sam and Snooki try to track down the killer. A Good Samaritan rescues Tara. Jason is in trouble again with the law.

Episode 12: ‘You’ll be the Death of Me’

Sookie discovers ties with the murders. Bill has to protect her. Jason decides to mend his ways and start afresh after an experience in the jailhouse.

Adele Gran Stackhouse – played by Lois Smith – Season 1

Lafayette Reynolds – played by Nelsan Ellis – Seasons 1 to 4
Lafayette is the cousin of Tara. He is a gay club kid who happens to be impetuous and who stands out like the proverbial sore thumb at Bon Temps, though he can look after himself just dandy. He actually relishes being the one who is out of the ordinary and wears androgynous clothing with caked on make-up in public. Lafayette works at Merlotte’s as a cook but his real calling to make a living is to sell illegal substances (and on occasion his body) from his home. He will sometimes bite off a lot more than he will be able to chew though, when he is dealing with vampire blood (or V).

Maryann – played by Michelle Forbes – Season 1 to 2
To all intents and purposes, Maryann is a neo-hippy and independently wealthy social worker taking in lost souls such as Eggs and Tara into her rural mansion while helping them to put their lives back together again. She possesses mystical powers though (and tends to jog in the nude at nighttime in the company of a hog), as well as having a mysterious connection to Sam that makes her motives a bit questionable.

Andy Bellefleur – played by Chris Bauer – Seasons 1 to 4
Andy works as a policeman at Bon Temps but has dubious abilities and is constantly looking to establishing his authority in the town, much to the mortification of Jason who is a regular trouble stirrer. When things do not quite work out the way he wants them to, Andy will tend to find some solace in a bottle.

Jessica Hamby – played by Deborah Ann Woll – Seasons 1 to 4
When Jessica was alive, she was a recluse living under the thumb of her parents. After the vampire tribunal forced Bill to turn Jessica in to a vampire, she turned into a wild child wanting to discover her newfound power and freedom much to Bill’s chagrin. Bill is now her new custodian. Jessica finds solace with Hoyt Fortenberry.

Hoyt Fortenberry – played by Jim Parrack – Seasons 1 to 4
Hoyt is Jason’s friend but they are in many ways polar opposites. Hoyt is a pleasant guy who is looking for a special girl so that he can settle down. He thinks that Jessica is the one, but Jessica’s vampirism upsets the apple cart somewhat especially when his domineering mother has to give approval.

Lorena – played by Mariana Klaveno – Seasons 1 to 3
Following the Civil War, Bill was given the gift of an eternal life by Lorena that forced him into leaving his wife and children forever. Both her and Bill stayed a couple until the beginning of the 20^th century and fed on any human with sadistic delight until Bill tired of this lifestyle and then left Lorena. Because she is his maker though, she still possesses a bit of pull over Bill and is not very pleased with him dating Sookie, a human.

Sookie is a quirky barmaid who has a special gift of being able to read minds. Her hometown is in Bon Temps, Louisiana and her ability has left her feeling like the proverbial outcast. She feels alone. Not only that, but her parents also died while she was still young. She feels disconnected from the small-mindedness of the town, particularly when Bill, the new vampire in the town is greeted by the townsfolk with very suspicious eyes. Sookie cannot read the mind of Bill, and she finds comfort in this as it makes their interactions a lot more natural. The torrid romance that ensues raises a lot of eyes around the small town and causes quite a few headaches as each person attempts to play a part in each other’s world.

Bill Compton – played by Stephen Moyer – Seasons 1 to 4

Bill is a vampire who is 173 years old. At one time he was in the Confederate army fighting the Civil War. He is now coming back to the home of his family at Bon Temps to hopefully reconnect with his humanity. His vampire impulses are tested with Sookie and their relationship, though. Even when keeping his bloodlust under control he still has to deal with the vampires, the humans and the others for wanting to get closer to Sookie for both evil and good purposes.

Tara Thornton – played by Rutina Wesley – Seasons 1 to 4

Tara is a feisty girl who has a tough demeanor and quick temper that has been the result of looking after her mother who is an alcoholic. She and Sookie have been best friends since childhood. She tends the bar where Sookie also works so Tara and Sookie will now be able to spend more time together. However, Sookie cannot always be there for her friend because she and Bill are now in a relationship. Tara’s own life is chaotic with her bad attitude, her unsteady love life and her mother.

Jason Stackhouse – played by Ryan Kwanten – Seasons 1 to 4

Jason is the older brother of Sookie but the more irresponsible one. He is a substance abuser and dimwitted womanizer who always lands up on the other side of any law. He always tries to stay faithful to a woman but lands up with the wrong girl over and over. He does mean well though and senses what is right and what is wrong, though he does get a bit skewed sometimes especially with a vampire dating his sister.

Sam Merlotte – played by Sam Trammell – Seasons 1 to 4

Sookie’s boss is called Sam. This good man stays clear of any drama spilling over in the bar. He is fond of Sookie and this will sometimes get him more involved than he would care to admit. He therefore sees Bill as his rival and has a romance with Tara in hopes of taking his mind away from Sookie. Bill is not the only supernatural person in Sookie’s world; it seems that Sam also has some secrets.

The show is televised on HBO, a first-rate cable network within the USA and is produced by Home Box Office (HBO) together with the Your Face Goes Here Entertainment production company. The series premiered on the 7^th September 2008. The series has won numerous awards including an Emmy and a Golden Globe, and has also received critical acclaim. On 14^th June 2009 the show premiered its second 12 episode season and on 13^th June 2010 it premiered its third season. On 21^st June 2010 Home Box Office renewed the series for its fourth season. This debuted on 26^th June 2011.

 Title Sequence

The Emmy nominated series title sequence of True Blood was created by the production studio of Digital Kitchen that also created the title sequences of Dexter and Six Feet Under. The sequence is mainly composed of images of the Deep South setting of the show and is played to the song ‘Bad Things’, written as well as recorded by Jace Everett, a country-music singer from America. Digital Kitchen wanted to create a sequence by merging contradictory images of religion, violence and sex and ultimately showing them from a predatory, supernatural creature’s point of view by observing the human beings from behind the shadows. They arranged for the title sequence to move from the morning to the night, culminating in a baptism and thus exploring the ideas of forgiveness and redemption.

Digital Kitchen also wanted to put across to the audience how sexual energy and religious fanaticism could corrupt a human and make them become animalistic. Numerous frames of certain shots were accordingly cut which created a jittery feel to the movements, while some shots were merely played back slowly. Drops of blood were also splattered on individual frames. The transitions of the sequences were put together differently though. The end frame of a certain shot and the 1^st frame of another shot were used as one Polaroid photo. This was next divided between backing and emulsion. This emulsion was subsequently filmed and further separated by various chemicals. The shots from the separation were then placed back for the final editing.

Music

The music of the series is supervised by Gary Calamar, a Grammy Award nominated television and film music supervisor and American DJ whose credits also include Varsity Blues, Dexter, House, and Six Feet Under. His goal for the soundtrack of True Blood was in creating something spooky, bluesy and swampy and to also feature local musicians from Louisiana. He has been nominated twice for a Grammy Award for the soundtrack albums of True Blood.

Nathan Barr is a television and film composer who has studied music since he was 4. He wrote the original score for True Blood that features glass harmonica, piano, guitar and cello as well as other instruments that he performs solo.
